Essential Indiana winter driving tips

On Behalf of | Dec 11, 2025 | Motor vehicle accidents |

The colder air is here, and for motorists in Indiana, the first dangers of winter driving are already upon us. Now is the time to prepare your vehicle and adjust your driving for another season of slick roads.

If you travel on busy local routes, such as Interstate 65 near Columbus and State Road 7 near Madison, you must exercise extreme caution. Conditions can change very fast. I-65 is among the state’s most dangerous highways, but all roads are risky when the pavement gets slick.

Winter driving hazards in Southern Indiana

Winter weather creates serious challenges that increase the risk of a crash. Over 116,800 people are injured each year in U.S. crashes on snowy, slushy or icy roads, according to the Federal Highway Administration. The most dangerous hazard is often unseen.

Black ice, or glaze, is a thin, transparent layer of ice. It forms frequently on bridges, overpasses and shaded areas of highways. Other concerns include:

  • Reduced visibility: Snow and sleet can significantly impair visibility.
  • Longer stopping distances: Slick pavement can increase stopping distances two to 10 times compared to dry roads.

Even a light dusting of snow or freezing rain can quickly cause a multi-car pileup if drivers do not slow down. Being prepared for rapidly changing road conditions is critical.

Essential safety tips for winter travel

Being prepared is your best defense against a serious winter crash. You must take steps now to ensure your vehicle is ready and your driving habits are safe.

  • Keep an emergency kit in your car that includes blankets, a first-aid kit, a flashlight and sand or cat litter for traction.
  • Adjust your speed accordingly for road conditions and increase your following distance to at least eight to 10 seconds.
  • Avoid sudden movements, such as rapid acceleration or sharp turns.

Safety experts also strongly warn against using cruise control on icy or wet roads. A loss of traction can cause you to lose control of your vehicle instantly.

Take action if an accident occurs

Even the safest drivers get into accidents caused by someone else’s mistake, and the risk is higher on snow and ice-covered roads. If you or a loved one is injured in a wreck, having skilled legal representation can be invaluable for receiving compensation.

An experienced attorney can help protect your rights to receive damages for your medical bills and other accident-related losses. Taking proactive safety measures is vital, but knowing you have support after a crash provides peace of mind.
